400 Students Attend Student Leadership Conference – Students, Leaders: Sharing the Vision

Northwest Suburban Integration School District (NWSISD) hosted the 9th annual Student Leadership Conference on April 22, 2019 at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park.  This annual conference unites a diverse group of high school students from across the NWSISD consortium.

Students participated in workshops, competitions, and a career and college fair. Keynote Speaker Nerita Hughes, Dean of Business, Technology, Career & Workforce Development at North Hennepin Community College kicked off the event speaking about her college and career path after high school, through college for her undergrad degree and subsequent master’s degree all while raising a family. Perseverance and support from unexpected avenues helped shape her goals and keep her on track for the many opportunities that have come her way.

Students pre-registered for competitions including College/Career Exploration, Storybook Writing, Lesson Plan Writing, Educational Games, Employability Skills, Conference Theme Development, and NWSISD style Shark Tank.  Students involved in AVID and Educator’s Rising at their high schools use these competitions to further develop skills, receive feedback on submitted works, as well as further their interest in education.  Winners were announced during lunch.

Students also had the opportunity to attend instructional workshops with topics ranging from financial investment, building a scholarship kit, personal brand management, as well as a service learning project – making blankets for babies!  The career and college fair included representatives from Anoka Technical College, Century College, Dunwoody College, Thunderbird Aviation, Metro Transit Police Department, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and North Hennepin Community College.
